What are Muscle Cars
During the Nineteen Sixties and ceasing production during the beginning of the Nineteen Seventies, a unique class of American Car appeared on the scene , and almost instantaneously became widely desirable , particularly with sports car enthusiasts , before fading cursorily from the scene to become a modern day classic – This was the age of ‘Muscle Cars’.
Muscle Cars were called this because of their large V8 and V12 performance motors and ridiculously fast acceleration.
Most muscle cars were fitted with V8 engines generating over 300 to 400 bhp and consequently were without doubt very expensive and costly to repair .
Muscle cars were built with high performance engine parts such as specialist multiple valves , camshafts ,air intakes advanced carburettors and free flowing exhaust systems that helped to generate greater engine power and because of this – higher car insurance premiums
US sports cars before The 1960′s were ordinarily the bulky and cumbersome prestige motors fitted with the manufacturers most advanced production engine .
The exception to the rule was the Corvette , America’s first sports car built in 1953 . During 1962 the Chevrolet Corvette had been fitted with a V8 engine throwing out 327 hp and became the first of the breed of two seater American Muscle cars, replacing the much bulky top of the range models .
When Ford Mustang was created in 1964 other car builders were quick to follow and led to most of the sports car market becoming controlled by lightweight vehicles with V8 engines which became known as ‘Pony Cars’, although there were many exceptions as older classics such as the Ford Thunderbird were upgraded with bigger engines .
The Muscle car period ended in the 1970′s with the Global oil crisis and petrol rationing , which when coupled with incredibly high insurance premiums and emission controls, led to a a lack of demand and the Muscle Car faded into history to become one of the greatest American Sports Cars ever manufactured .
