Ultra Allergen Paper Filters with Holes
Every trip to the local Home Depot finds me wondering how to inform the general public on the ineffectiveness of those very expensive “Ultra Allergen” paper filters. I know that every one of those customers believe they are doing a good thing for their health, in fact, the expense alone makes them feel like this must be an effective solution for their allergies. How can I get the word out? Write the truth and hope that the truth will burn a hole in all of the “fluff” marketing that is rampant in the air cleaning market.
If you read the label of the product, it states that it is effective up to 91 percent of large particles (read larger than 1 micron). It also states that it is protecting your furnace. The confusing part of the marketing is the fact that it has a sticker on it that shows the American Lung Association logo. Looking carefully, you see that they are a partner in education about indoor air quality. This does not mean that their products are endorsed by the American Lung Association, they just help put education material together for them.
The American Lung Association has put together requirements for a “Healthy Home”. These requirements are barely met by the Ultra Allergen paper filters, while products like the Electro Breeze electronic air cleaners far surpass those standards.
